Class March 2, 2009

So, today in class we have a couple of visitors. There was a college recruiter and a field recruiter, they were there to give us insight at what major corporations are looking for and what we need to do. The main thing I took from their visit is that you need to make sure that your resume makes you stand out of a crowd. What is a resume that just blends in with every other resume. It is just not exciting. Instead you have to make sure that during your tenure in college that you take part of as many organizations that you can. Because, corporations are actually looking at this a lot closer than anyone actually thinks. Also, they want you to become a leader in that group because they are trying to find the next leader in their corporation and this is a way to show that you have the capability of leading.

Next, Mr. Feinberg took over the class again. He keeps telling us that leading is essential in our lives. That we do have to be optimistic to be a leader in an organization. Because if we don't show this positive attitude in our life then people will be taking us as a joke. Then we watched a video on Jessica Clement who is a American soldier who got hit by a roadside bomb. She was put into a coma and had a 2% chance to gain life again. And, she has overtaken this and has made a huge recovery. She had to learn how to walk and talk again. And, now she is doing fine but still feels some pain. But, she never gave up and never wants to ever give up. And, that is the most important thing I took from that clip was to never give up.

  1. I liked to read your blog about that lecture because I particularly liked this lecture. When the JCPenney recruiter came in and gave the presentation, I thought it was one of the most informative presentations about how to get noticed by employers. I immediately went home to work on my resume so that I could remember all of the tips she gave us. The first one I that I remember, and I have always been told this, was not to have a resume longer than a page. Secondly, she reminded us not to include high school activities. I never thought that was a big deal until she explained why that may be a bad idea because it looks like you weren’t involved in much during college. I took a lot away from that lecture. That lecture definitely reminds me of how Feinberg will always say, “Do you deserve the $90,000 job? Why should I give it to you over the next person?” That was a great leadership lesson by both Feinberg and the recruiter because we were able to get tips from someone who is an employer and chooses outstanding applicants constantly.
The second, helpful, lesson to take away from your blog is the part about being an optimistic leader. The specific example that you used from lecture was Jessica Clement, which was one of the most memorable stories t hat we have ever heard in lecture. She is a good leadership role model because she had never, and still has never given up on herself and others. I think that it is so inspiring that for a living she is a motivational speaker for injured veterans and soldiers. I’m not sure if I know many people that would spend so much time trying to motivate other people to get back on their feet. Besides being given a 2% chance to live and re-learning to live her life like she did before, I think that is the most encouraging story I’ve ever heard. It seems that you, as well as myself, have been able to take away quite a lesson from someone like Jessica about never giving up. Stay optimistic not only to yourself but to others, and that is how you will lead people in the right direction.
